cars were driven by legends such as Gilles Villeneuve, Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi, Keke Rosberg… Now in the hands of their current owners and running exactly as they were in period, these legendary cars take to the track once again as the fastest museum in the world runs flat-out in front of your very eyes. The FIA Historic Formula One Championship™ gives you the opportunity to get a feel for the way F1 was in its glory days.

The world of historic motorsport has become one of the big growth areas in motorsport over recent years. The success of the Goodwood festivals, the Monaco Historic Meeting and the continuing increase in historic motorsport competitors across the globe all points to the fact that there is a considerable appetite for nostalgic motorsport.

Featuring the Grand Prix cars on the F1scene between 1966 and 1985, those beautiful models and marques from a legendary, past-era of motor racing, the FIA Historic Formula One Championship™ recreates the spectacle of Grand Prix of yesteryear. The field covers a 20-year period of F1 racing and, naturally, there is a vast speed differential between the eldest cars – such as Jackie Stewart’s Tyrrell 001 – and the latter machines – like the ex Steffan Johannsen Tyrrell 012 and Brabham BT49.

To level the playing field, the championship is split into 4 classes according to age range and points are scored within the class thus giving all drivers the chance to claim the overall FIA trophy at the end of the season.

Motorsport’s governing body, the FIA, also recognises this important championship. By nominating HFO as the only official FIA Historic Formula One Championship™ - status achieved over 7 years ago - the FIA is recognising HFO as the best historic formula one series in the world. Since the accolade was granted, the championship has gone from strength to strength. Competitor numbers are up; over 50 drivers registered to become members of the Drivers’ Association over the last 2 years and grids average 25 cars. With the majority of cars powered by the legendary Cosworth DFV engine - still the most successful Grand Prix engine ever made – the sound created as the grid of 25 V8 DFVs roar away at the lights is an echo straight from the past - and an unforgettable experience.

In 2007, HFO visits some of the best circuits in the world: Hockenheim, the Hungaroring GP, Mugello, Spa, Nurburgring, Brands Hatch, Estoril and Donington. The racing is close and competitive and very fast. The cars are distinctive, beautiful and show the development of design over a full 20-year period of F1 racing. Enjoy the show!
